Russian clay works

Artist Elena Tchernomazova lives in Gaithersburg, Maryland; she has been practicing sculptural ceramics which she feels is the best medium for expressing herself.  The plasticity of clay helps create whatever she wants in three dimensions. Elena’s surrealistic clay works are hand-built, made of white stoneware with color under-glazes. Her works often combine the human face or figure with architectural elements, musical instruments, and mythological or real animals. A lot of her inspiration comes from various Eurasian mythological traditions such as the art of Medieval Europe, Ancient Greece and Rome, Middle East, India and China. Every student will be supplied with piece of clay. They then need to do the following steps: 1.   Use a roller to make a slab. 2.   Use a piece of fabric or plastic (or another material) to create texture. 3.   Make a drawing of a fish contour on the surface of the slab. 4.   Cut out the fish silhouette with a knife. 5.   Cut out inner circle (oval). 6.   Cut out a small fish from that piece of clay. 7.   Smooth all edges with wet sponge. 8.   Make holes for wires. 9.   Paint fishes with underglazes.
